Giving Last.fm one Last.try

Yes, it’s a bad joke. Go jump in the lake if you don’t like it…

I’ve decided to give Last.fm one last go, and to my surprise, it does work rather well this time!

My user page is at http://www.last.fm/user/knightjetman/.

And yes, it does mean I’ve left MOG. It was good, but I didn’t like how it had to go through your entire collection before it started to work properly. Kudos to them for the painless account deletion process.

An online dilemma

Currently, I am using free hosting at Frihost.net, whom I do thank for graciously allowing me to host this blog for free, but lately it’s been giving me grief - namely because of some of the restrictions they’ve placed on what can and cannot be done on their servers.

This morning, I wanted to install the Friendfeed activity widget for Wordpress, thereby removing a few of the widgets I have on the right hand side of the page. Unfortunately for me, it requires the cURL functions of PHP5 to be enabled. Something Frihost will not allow at all, as they believe the cURL functions are likely to be abused and bring their servers down. Now, while that is a valid concern, most of us would like to get our pages working to the full extent of how we see fit.

So…that leads me to the big question - do I stay on a free service, or actually pay for webhosting. Now, Jumba’s personal packages sound perfectly priced to me, and they are Australian-based, so it’s keeping someone employed locally, which is always a good thing. $29.95 for 500MB and 5GB of traffic is what I’m aiming at, as I don’t think people are going to flock here in vast numbers.

Next dilemma - do I pay for the webhosting, or do I go the Knights v Roosters game this Sunday? I really want to get out of the house for a day and have a day to myself, but as most people are aware, it can be expensive (although, to my credit, I don’t think I spent more than $50 for the whole day the last time I went to a Knights game). Oh what to do, what to do!!!

Why I fear for the English language - Part 2

Teachers have to LOL — or they’d cry (theage.com.au)

This is why I feel sorry for teachers. And for future employers trying to figure out what the hell they’re banging on about.

Listen up you punks, and listen good. If the Internet is to become the centre of the universe, then your online writing HAS to improve. Otherwise, we’ll end up having to use Orwellian style newspeak-esque language just to communicate.

What is wrong with proper usage of the English language? Can someone explain THAT to me?

English? What’s that?

I have fears for the English language when I see comments like this:

O RLY? idk. w/e. Every second you spend typing FULL WORDS is a second you’re NOT spending LIVING LIFE! Interweb slang FTW!

This guy is an idiot. Most people who use drivel in everyday use probably aren’t living life, they’re probably sitting on their ever increasing backside, breaking laws at the speed of light and proving that the money taxpayers and (especially so in Australia) their parents spent on educating these dopes was a waste of time and money. I’d hate to be an English teacher these days.

It does not take that much to type a few extra characters and use PROPER English. I use limited slang and extensive use of online dictionaries and spell checking add-ons. I’m an self-confessed dope and even I try to ensure people can understand me clearly.

How would you like if this blog actually turned into nothing but txt speak and Web slang? Think about it…

Oh, and here’s a NetLingo translation for us “normal” people of the afore-mentioned quote:

Oh really? I don’t know, whatever. Every second you spend typing full words is a second you’re not spending living life? Internet slang for the win!

Intelligent life on earth? I don’t think so!

Ponder this - the future of downloading TV shows online - to pay or cop the ads?

Here’s something I’ve been thinking about for a while, especially since I posted this to The Spy Report today - CBC to distribute show via BitTorrent.

While some broadcasters are happy to offer shows free of charge online, which is fair enough, what if they wanted to put ads in their shows? Say they put the ads at the start, middle and end of the file.

Or what if they wanted you to pay, say, $1 or $2 for a non-DRM file, in high resolution and in any format you wanted, minus the ads.

What would you do? I cannot see them sitting on their hands about this for much longer.

What are your thoughts? I’d love to know…

High-speed broadband by the end of the year?

High-speed broadband by years end: Conroy (from ABC News)

I’ll believe it when I see it. I wonder if he meant to say “High-speed broadband by years end in metropolitan areas only”. I’d believe that one….sadly.

ABC relaunches local radio websites

As I’ve reported over at The Spy Report

ABC Local Radio has relaunched their network of station websites this morning. Formerly known as The Backyard, the network is now known as ABC Local. While the websites have only just been relaunched this morning, with many not fully operational, such as 1233 ABC Newcastle’s webpage, an idea of what content will feature on the websites has already been discovered.

An example of such is featured in this post, with ABC Upper Hunter’s website already partially functional. This example features a full program schedule, a RSS feed of Upper Hunter news headlines, as well as presenter photos and biographies.

The main regional site (see second image) contains feature stories, news headlines, links to other sites in the ABC network, and a rotating header with local images (such as the Campbells Corner building in Scone demonstrated in the second screen shot).

The conversion to the new website should be completed within the next twenty four hours.

MediaSpy discussion: ABC.net.au

Here’s the Upper Hunter website below.

The colours aren’t too bad, loving the new RSS feed of just Upper Hunter stories, instead of combining the two newsrooms in Muswellbrook and Newcastle.

To check them out for yourself, go to abc.net.au/local, and or the ABC Upper Hunter site, go abc.net.au/upperhunter/radio.
