From Kings to paupers

Kings kicked out of NBL (from ABC News)

You know your league is in the s*** when a grand finalist is booted out of the competition for failing to pay players. It’s a sad state of affairs when even the naming rights sponsor and main broadcaster are looking likely to pull out.

I think it’s time for a major revamp of the NBL. As much as shutting down the league is a potential option,
given there are clubs going well off the court, it’d hurt them a lot. The timing could be improved a little, as to minimise the clashes between the end of the footy seasons and the start of the A-League. Also, a better broadcast deal and improved promotion would help as well.

Finally, pull the plug on Singapore and concentrate on Australia and New Zealand. Have it so the only areas that can get a license in the future are a 2nd Sydney license, Brisbane (if the Bullets lose their license), Newcastle (I’m biased), Canberra and Hobart. Otherwise, no more licenses.

Like football before it, the grass roots are fine, just the pointy professional end is buggered. It needs the right people to put it in forward direction.

China’s answer to unruly Western sports fans

Spontaneity not a feature of Chinas planned Olympic support (from ABC News)

Lamest sports chant ever. You know the Communist Party could’ve come up with some humdingers
to taunt the West with during the Games, now don’t you?

Cracking a nut with a sledgehammer

Last night, I decided to get some sort of order into my life and installed Mozilla Sunbird to arrange stuff like my Centrelink payments (yes, I’m on Centrelink. I don’t aim to be on it for long, so don’t worry all you taxpayers out there), hockey and dart games and so on. Then I discovered you can add other calendars by importing iCalendar files (.ICS files) into Sunbird, so after tracking down stuff for Euro 2008, the V8s and the A-League, I then tried to find a NRL calendar.

I remembered I had downloaded a hefty package from e-Diary for the NRL season in Outlook format. Now, I don’t have Outlook installed, so I decided to attempt converting that into either iCal or to a CSV file and import from there. Well…that was easier said then done.

After doing several Google searches, downloaded a few programs, couldn’t get them to install and so on, I was at my wits end! I was about to send an email to e-Diary to convince them to do a ICS version of the calendar, when they had it up on their website! A few forms and a email message later and there it is!

My schedule for June

And the lesson here is? Your solution often is in places you forgot to look!

Now I can keep track of the footy and V8s as well my hockey, darts and Centrelink stuff through devices like my iPod (simply by copying the ICS file to the iPod). Now to find a way to put it on my mobile…

Chicks I Dig - The Knights Cheerleaders

From this week’s Big League magazine - two of the Newcastle Knights’ cheerleaders, Larah and Karlie.

I like the way the Knights cheerleading team has gone, more towards the American style athletic cheerleading teams. It stops the complaints about how sexist the idea of cheerleaders are, and encourages a healthy lifestyle. It works for me!

Chicks I Dig - Stephanie Rice

This week, I salute one of the fast-rising stars of the pool (with emphasis on the word fast, given they keep breaking world records), with her very own entry into this blog. Yep, it’s Stephanie Rice.

Not to mention, I’ve gotta say, she looks damn fine in a police uniform, as well as a body suit. ;)

Shame on Swimming Australia for telling her to delete her photos from Facebook. Thankfully, the Daily Telegraph put these up on their website.

You’ll need to click below to see other posts, Wordpress and the server still aren’t playing nicely, and I had to manually code the images into the post.
